CARE FOR PET BIRDS-
Is Medical Care Possible?
Quality medical care is currently being practiced on
birds no bigger than your thumb - and even half that size!
In this age of computer chips and lasers, veterinarians
are keeping current - Diagnostic tests on less than one drop of blood - Injections for
birds with micro-fine needles on syringes that are accurate to 2/10 of a drop - Surgery
with specially designed equipment resembling that used for eye surgery.
Is Medical Care Practical?
Sick birds, in general, respond very well to therapy. Being
extremely hearty animals, proper therapy can seemingly perform miracles. Veterinarians
have frequently observed birds withstanding more hardship than could be tolerated by cats
and dogs.
Not cheap but also not expensive. The cost of diagnostics ranges
about the same for all animals, but there is a big savings for bird owners when it comes
to medicines. As only small amounts are required, even the most expensive medicines are
not too costly.
How Can I Tell If My Bird Is Sick?
Birds are much different than other animals. Even though an owner
may have a thorough understanding of cats and dogs, the general response of birds to
problems, sickness, and other diseases is different.
Birds effectively hide their problems showing signs of sickness only
when the problem is advanced. Birds that look sick may being dying. Early signs of
sickness are easily missed and frequently misinterpreted. Speedy diagnosis and treatment
of problems is important.
The Most Important Visit To a Veterinarian.
Veterinarians emphasize that the most important physical examination
for birds is the first one! Birds can appear well and still have problems. It's only fair
to the pet store or breeder and new owner to immediately learn the condition of the bird's
health. Staring with a 100% healthy bird is the most important, or at least be aware of
the problems and their seriousness.
Know Your Veterinarian.
Every animal at some time in his life will become sick and need
medical services. There's a real advantage to knowing an avian veterinarian who is
personally familiar with your bird.
Further, if the veterinarian has your bird on file, you can freely
telephone him for information. He knows your bird and has the background needed to answer
questions.
How do I Learn About Bird Care?
Generally, pet stores and veterinarians bear the burden of informing
owners about pet bird care. Veterinarians, especially, accept the responsibility because
teaching proper bird care is an important part of disease prevention.
A VETERINARIAN IS ONE OF THE MOST
IMPORTANT PERSONS IN YOUR BIRD'S LIFE.
